The British Council is offering a grant of up to GBP 5,000 for English Language Teacher Associations (ELTAs). This grant will help ELTAs share online teaching and professional development resources from TeachingEnglish, covering monthly themes from August 2024 to February 2025.
What is TeachingEnglish?
TeachingEnglish is an online platform for English language teaching practitioners, featuring UK and local expertise, and the British Council’s unique insights. It allows teachers and teacher educators to build professional networks, share ideas and knowledge, and stay updated with the latest research and innovations in teaching. Through TeachingEnglish, teachers become part of a vibrant international community striving to provide better English teaching to learners everywhere.
The website offers a wide range of lesson plans, events and learning resources to support teaching practice and career development.
Additionally, TeachingEnglish has several interactive Facebook groups including:
- British Council TeachingEnglish, hosting live online events and encouraging discussions between teachers.
- British Council courses for teachers, where educators can discuss ongoing online courses with course tutors and their peers from around the world.
TeachingEnglish also has dynamic Instagram and YouTube pages.
Who can apply for this grant?
ELTAs from the following countries can apply:
Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
What will I need to do to promote TeachingEnglish?
Promotion methods depend on your network and your teachers' professional development needs. You could share existing resources and opportunities through online platforms and face-to-face networks, or run workshops based on TeachingEnglish resources, tailored to your local context. The goal is to help teachers effectively use the resources and training to improve their teaching.
Will there be any specific requirements or reporting requirements?
Yes, submitting progress and financial reports on set deadlines is a contractual requirement after receiving funding.
What support will the British Council provide?
A consultant supporting the British Council will provide remote support for the application phase through email and video conferencing. An initial online Q&A session about the grant application process will be held on 18 July 2024, at 13.00 CET (details will be shared with successful applicants). The British Council will also:
- Respond to questions via email, with a dedicated staff member assigned.
- Provide grant guidance, including the grant cycle, monitoring, and reporting.
- Offer capacity building on financial management and reporting.
- Conduct monitoring visits for face-to-face events.
- Share best practice workshops and webinars among associations.
How do I apply?

As part of the application form, you will be asked to provide:
- Information (including legal status) of your ELTA
- A project proposal detailing your project/activity plan (you will be asked to detail several areas including roles and responsibilities, number of teachers benefiting, reach, communication and visibility approach, inclusion approach, and measurement of uptake).
- A project timeline and key milestones
- Costings.
The deadline for applications is Tuesday 23 July, at 23.59 CET.
